The city of Kairouan, situated in 150 kilometres in the southwest of Tunis, is considered as the fourth holy city of the Islam.

It is towards 670 that the Moslem Arabs, under the direction of Oqba Ibn Nafi, founded the city with the aim of making a support in their campaign of conquest of North Africa …

With the arrival of the Arabs, a new way of living is established governed by the Faith and the sacred book, the Koran. 

And so the big mosque of Kairouan was built, place where can gather the Muslims to prostrate themselves before god and express their community faith.

The Big mosque became one of the major monument of the Islam and a masterpiece of the universal architecture.

Until XIth century, the city was an important Islamic center of Moslem North Africa. With its medina, its markets organized by corporations, its mosques and the other religious buildings, Kairouan is registered since 1988 on the list of the unesco world heritage since 1988.

Kairouan also offers an exceptional testimony on the Moslem civilization of the first centuries of the Hegira and establishes a precious heritage.

In 2009, the city is proclaimed major of the Islamic culture by the Islamic Organization for the education, the sciences and the culture.
